The appearance of a strange nameless Pokémon during the latest Community Day event in Pokémon GO has left players scratching their heads over the past few days. Players who caught the odd, nut-shaped Pokémon eventually discovered that it was merely a transformed Ditto. However, that didn’t resolve what the original nut-shaped creature was in the first place.
Today, that question was answered. In a new video released by The Pokémon Company, it turns out that the nut-shaped critter is a brand new species of Pokémon that has been seen for the first time in Pokémon GO. According to Professor Oak in the video, the new Pokémon is an ancient Mythical Pokémon named Meltan.
Meltan belongs to the Hex Nut category and is a Steel type Pokémon, which explains its metallic, Ditto-shaped lower body. According to the Pokémon Let’s Go website, Meltan is composed of liquid metal and can “corrode metal and absorb it into its own body.” Meltan can also generate electricity, which it uses as an energy source as well as an attack that is fired from its eye.
The most intriguing part about Meltan is the role it plays in both Pokémon GO and the upcoming Pokémon Let’s Go games. According to today’s announcement, “Pokémon GO is somehow key to meeting this curious new Pokémon in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!”
Although we know much more about this curious little Pokémon now than we did a few days ago when it was first discovered, Meltan is still relatively shrouded in mystery. We will keep you apprised of any new information regarding Meltan in Pokémon GO, so be sure to check back here for updates.
